This report provides detailed information about multiple deprivation in South Africa. A ward-level Index of Multiple Deprivation has been created for each of South Africa’s nine provinces using data from the 2001 Census.

Each Provincial Index of Multiple Deprivation (PIMD) contains statistical information about wards within the province in terms of levels of multiple deprivation. In addition, information is provided about levels of income and material deprivation, education deprivation, health deprivation, employment deprivation and living environment deprivation.

This is accompanied by a technical report which contains details about the methodological techniques that were used. Both of the reports, maps of each province showing the PIMD at ward level, and EXCEL spreadsheets containing the ward level data for each province can be downloaded.

The Provincial Indices of Multiple Deprivation have been developed by a team of academics and researchers from the University of Oxford, the Human Sciences Research Council and Statistics South Africa.
